I received this question from a subscriber and thought it may help you as well…
“I am struggling with emotion in a business situation. Basically, I am a DJ and photo booth owner, and I bought my own DJ equipment for gigs that I find or come my way and the company I work for (the owner) is taking this move as competition. We have built something great over the past 5 years and I do not want to leave him, because he books me regular and pays me well. I just want my own equipment for my own things……and all the money for it. We are real close friends and he is freaking out his best DJ is leaving him. Not leaving……just adding to the brand and make some money for my family.” What to do?
I have a few thoughts. First from your employers standpoint. Shame on them for not planning and laying out a process for this. In our company, we have policies laid forth and signed on day 1 of a new hire that go over these policies. We have a no-compete agreement valid for a certain time period and certain distance after employment with us ceases. Your current boss just learned this lesson the hard way. After I learned the hard way and you started on your own, I would likely terminate your employment and move on.
Some thoughts for you. Your boss probably depends on you for a good portion of income and does see this as a direct threat to that. Right or wrong doesn’t matter, that is how it is perceived. You need to put on your boss hat for a minute and see how you would want your employee to approach this if the situation was reversed. Did this person train you from the ground up or were you hired on with skills already in place and just put to work? Have you discussed this possibility with him or did you just say this is the way it is?
The bottom line is it may be time for you to move on or you may have already decided to do so. My best advice is to talk it through, remain friends, and do not burn your bridges even if you no longer work with him. The sting will lessen as time goes on and likely you can refer business to each other long term.
There is no cut and dry right or wrong choice here and it will be a hard one. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

As some of you know, I have been crazy busy on the phone doing free one on one 30 minute mini strategy sessions. Call after call I hear excuses as to why someone can’t do what they want. Why they won’t invest in themselves. Why they CAN’T do all kinds of things.
It is very disheartening. I can see more potential in most people’s businesses than they can in their own. The bottom line is they just need to do something… anything to turn the corner. I think psychologically many people are scared of success. Many people even know logically the right steps to take but just won’t do them. Many of them I can absolutely help take their business to the next level but they need to take action first.
Don’t be like the majority. Make a plan. Do something. Take the first steps, they are often the hardest. If you don’t know how to do it, then find someone who has done it and ask them. There are tons of shortcuts to success but you still have to take action or pay someone to do it for you.
The new year is often full of BS goals that will never be achieved because they were poor goals to start with. Get someone to help you. Get it done.
Take action now….

Yesterday I came across a facebook post that said something along the lines of “those who wait until January 1 to take action on their resolutions are likely to fail.”
Makes perfect sense. If you have resolved to do something, you don’t wait until the calendar tells you it is time. You do it right now. This is what successful people do.
Almost two weeks ago, I started a diet and exercise plan including BeachBody’s P90 workouts. Could I have waited until the 1st? Sure, but why? I had many family and friends tell me I picked a terrible time to start a diet because of the holidays. Actually, I could not have picked a better time. If I waited I would have moved even further the wrong way due to holiday eating habits.
If you really believe something is the right path, you need to take action right now on going down that path. There will always be an obstacle or an excuse. It is up to you to be different. To ignore what everyone else does. Do what you know is right and do it right now. Take control.
Words do little to make things happen. Results are all because of actions taken.

I hope you had a wonderful labor day yesterday. Today, I defer to one of my mentors, Dave Ramsey and a message from his Entreleadership on delegating…https://www.entreleadership.
I pass you off for two reasons:
1. There is a great message in what Dave says. [read the article as it is better than the video clip] 2. My two young boys decided we needed to have a late night party. Our 8 month old Mason is teething and was crying until midnight (and again at 3am and 6am). Apparently our two year old, Logan thought it was a good idea so he stayed up until about 2am as well. Shortly after the fun, we had a very loud thunderstorm. What a night!
Anyhow, check out the link, read the article, and watch the video: https://www.entreleadership.
